Our Story
We have been serving the greater Toronto area with North Restaurant (since 1998) and Gilaneh Restaurant (since 2010). Our ancestors initiated the business back in the 50s in Gilan province, located in the NORTH of Iran, which is surrounded by the Caspian Sea and the Albors Mountain Range. Gilan Province is known for its traditional cuisine, lush greenery, and scenic combination of sea, rivers, lakes, and mountains. "Shomal" is a Persian word that translates to "north" in English. The term colloquially refers to the northern regions of Iran, including Gilan Province and other neighboring provinces along the Caspian Sea coast, to denote the northern provinces with their distinct cuisine, climate, culture, and geography compared to the rest of Iran. While the Okanagan Valley in Canada and Gilan Province in Iran are situated in different parts of the world, there are some similarities between the two regions, such as agricultural importance, natural beauty, climate, cultural diversity, and tourism. Our mission is to introduce Persian cuisine to the Okanagan Valley and offer a delightful culinary fusion, combining the region's local flavors with the rich and aromatic dishes of Iran.
